Nicholas Howe - Music Review
At a posh rooftop festival in the slick part of Kensington I experienced Nicholas Howe’s music for the first time. Part of a stellar line up of fantastic London bands, his music immediately stuck out from the rest. When he came on stage with his back-up musicians the venue became electrified. And I could see why he is fast becoming one of London’s hottest musicians.
Almost as one the entire audience squeezed up to the front of the stage. I’ve noticed that in general British audiences are very subdued--maybe they might sway a little, or bob their heads, but there is very little open reaction.
However, when Howe opened with a rousing cover of Katy Tunstell’s Black Horse and A Cherry Tree and Fleetwood Mac’s Ohh Well, it was like everyone woke up. Hands were in the air, people were singing, and I felt like I was among Californians once more!
The heavy rhythms and sick guitar cords immediately I drew me in. Soon I was clapping and singing along with everyone else. It was one of the best renditions I’ve heard of that song, and I was instantly hooked!
Howe’s talent was boundless as he boldly explored all facets of rock music. He was capable of singing in any style. He was brilliant on the acoustic guitar and his voice had great range too. After some fantastic rock n’ roll tunes, some covers, some his own compositions, he brought it down into a mellow acoustic mood that was reminiscent of Jason Mraz. His single Riches In Heaven was a brilliant piece of music—and a new favourite of mine! With sick guitar cords and lyrics that wouldn’t be amiss on a Black Keys album, he brought down the house.
Howe’s energy was infectious! It’s clear to see why his fans love him. His passion for his music translated into an unforgettable performance. Just last year alone he performed over 300 gigs in nine different countries.
His music has taken him to the finals in numerous national competitions, TV spots, and even to Sweden where he sang for the Queen of Sweden and Mr. Bill Nighy. Recently he performed on ITV News for the Keep Streets Live campaign.
Born into a wealth of family talent, young Howe is definitely a rising star. He performs every Tuesday at an open mic session at The Lift 574. You can also catch him at the upcoming Glastonbury Festival, June 25-27. Mark your calendars-you don’t want to miss him!
